Artificial intelligence has moved past documenting history; it now fabricates it. The rise of deepfakes, powered by advances in generative AI, has blurred the line between storytelling and manipulation. Political figures now operate in an environment where reality can be rendered as easily as a tweet.
Over the past year, social platforms have become testing grounds for this new capability. President Donald Trump’s social media posts have shown him as a crowned monarch, a fighter pilot, and a superhero. None of these images were filmed or photographed. They were created with machine learning tools that transform text prompts into synthetic visuals. These posts are designed to build mythology and influence perception. In the age of generative AI, optics are no longer reflections of reality; they are engineered instruments of control.
Deepfakes rely on generative modeling—a branch of AI that includes diffusion models and GANs (generative adversarial networks).
These systems learn visual and audio patterns from large datasets and then produce new media that imitates those patterns with near-perfect precision. Unlike traditional image editing, which alters existing footage, generative AI fabricates new content from statistical inference.
The technology has become remarkably accessible. With tools such as Runway, Pika, and Midjourney, a single user can generate cinematic video or photorealistic portraits with simple text instructions. This democratization of creation has lowered the barrier for anyone to manufacture persuasive imagery at scale.
What makes this development significant is not only the realism of the results but the speed at which they can be produced. A video that once required a full production team can now be made by one person in under an hour. Technology has automated imagination.
Political communication has always relied on imagery and symbolism. Deepfakes take that tradition further by combining it with automation. Trump’s AI-generated portrayals reinforce strength and invincibility, while California Governor Gavin Newsom’s parody videos ridicule his opponents. Both rely on the same algorithms, even when the intent is different.
Outside the United States, deepfakes have already been used as instruments of disinformation. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a fabricated video appeared showing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urging his troops to surrender. The clip spread widely before being identified as fake, demonstrating how easily synthetic media can destabilize public trust during moments of crisis.
The issue is no longer whether audiences believe what they see. It is that they begin to doubt everything they see. Over time, that erosion of confidence in visual evidence may pose a greater threat to democracy than any single piece of false content.
The influence of deepfakes extends far beyond their creation. Social media algorithms amplify them automatically. Recommendation systems are designed to maximize engagement rather than accuracy, rewarding emotional intensity over factual integrity. Deepfake content, optimized for outrage or awe, thrives in this environment.
As these systems deliver tailored content to individual users, they create fragmented realities. Each person’s feed becomes a customized version of the world, shaped by data and preference. Two citizens can follow the same political event and come away with completely different understandings of what occurred. This algorithmic segmentation of truth represents the political multiverse in its clearest form.
The result is a society divided not only by ideology but by perception itself.
While deepfakes challenge the authenticity of media, technology is also being used to defend it. Companies such as Adobe and Microsoft are embedding provenance data into images and videos to verify their origin. Blockchain-based projects are creating permanent records of digital content, and startups like Truepic are offering authentication services for visual media.
However, this has become a continuous process of adaptation. Detection algorithms improve, and generative systems evolve to evade them. Each layer of defense produces more sophisticated deception.
Author Nina Schick wrote in Deepfakes: The Coming Infocalypse that seeing will no longer be believing, and that verifying will replace it. Authenticity is no longer a matter of perception but of metadata, coding, and trust in the systems that store it.
The arms race between creation and detection is unlikely to end, yet it will define the next decade of information ethics.
The deeper consequence of deepfakes is not technological but philosophical. When truth becomes modular, leadership must change. Authority once depended on credibility; now it depends on transparency. Leaders and institutions that disclose, verify, and contextualize information will stand apart from those who rely on spectacle.
Democracy’s resilience in a world of synthetic media will depend on shared digital literacy and institutional accountability. Citizens must learn to interpret visual information critically, much as earlier generations learned to evaluate written news during the rise of the internet. The role of technology is to make verification seamless rather than burdensome.
As someone who has spent my career watching technology evolve from infrastructure to influence, I see deepfakes as the ultimate expression of that transformation. They show that innovation does not just change how we work; it changes how we believe.
When I encounter AI-generated portrayals of politicians as heroes, villains, or deities, I am reminded that technology no longer reflects society—it projects it. Every algorithm builds another layer of interpretation and another possible version of truth.
We created this multiverse, and while we cannot escape it, we must decide how to live within it: by valuing verification over virality, comprehension over speed, and substance over spectacle. The responsibility to preserve truth no longer rests solely with journalists or engineers. It belongs to everyone who still believes that facts should matter, even when fiction looks more convincing.
